One of the oldest golf clubs
The Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was founded in 1891 and is known as the oldest incorporated golf club in the US. It is also one of the founding members of the US Golf Association, which governs professional golf tournaments in the US. Its clubhouse is the original one built in 1892, which makes it the oldest clubhouse in the US.
You might expect such an old club to have an old view and an antique tradition of not allowing women to join, but you should know that the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was the first golf club in the US to allow women inside its walls as full, active members.
And it wasn’t something pushed closer to our times, to impress the public. This decision was made right after the club was founded.
This was a really bold move in 1891, one that some might even call revolutionary, especially considering that the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted American women the right to vote, was ratified as late as 1920.
